Drafts.

Front Cover.

Double page spread.

Contents page.

I took the fonts and colours that I am going to use on my front cover and incorporated them onto a front cover draft. The masthead has a suitable house-style to the genre, but I think it will look better as part of the banner or slogan. The slogan has a very suitable style but as a smaller size doesn't not look as good, it does have the aggressive edge and 'in your face' tone to it. The cover-story is in a small font and looks too 'plain' to be in the middle of the page, the font should stand out more to attract the attention of the audience. The banner is a suitable place on the page, but the colours do not mix well and it does not stand out clearly.

I again, used the fonts and colours I am going to use on my final draft of my contents page and changed them too see what they would look like. The title looks too plain and should stand out more, as well as the words for the pages, it looks too complicated too read and might confuse the readers, I believe that this style font would look better as the title rather than being put for the words. The banner at the bottom follows the same colour and font scheme as the front page, but the colour of the font is not very clear against the black background, although the font adds a aggressive and 'rocky' style to the page, the colours don't work.

I have used the same font for the text that I am going to use on my final draft because I think the font is easy to read and simple to use for the pages. The banner again, is the same as the front and contents page because they should be the same to attract the audience and for them too know what it is. I also kept the numbers the same as well as the 'Hear The Drum' title on the bottom of the page. The title on the page looks too 'plain' and doesn't have much of the 'rocky' edge and aggressive style that it needs to attract the audience to the page.

Preliminary task.

This is my front cover for my School magazine, I use an image of a student at the front of the school, so it was easy to realise it was a school magazine. I stuck to the same colour scheme, red, white and black, which was also inco-operated into the logo, which is 'S' from 'school' and 'F' from 'fun' and a turned bracket. I put in a masthead, slogan, banner, puffs, a barcode and a few cover-stories. FOr these I used 3 different fonts so it did not look the same and there was a variety on the page.
The masthead will be placed in the centre of the page, the font being Fluffy Slacks BTN and size 72. The colour will be red to follow the colour scheme of the front cover. The images will be small, but not small enough to not know what they contain. They will show what is in the rest of the magazine and refer to what it said in the text. The text will be a reasonable size 26/28 and still follow the colour scheme on the front, it will be easy to read and attract the audience with ‘fun’ words. Puff’s will be used, to make the first letter of each line larger to stand out more to audience. The number at the bottom of the page will just make it easier for the audience to know what page they’re on. The route of the eye allows the readers/audience to follow along mainly the text rather than the images, because the text is more important. With the principle of thirds, hotspots are mainly placed on the text and images. The background will just be plain white with a black border so it doesn’t distract the audience from the main parts within the page.

Do you like competitions in a magazine? 16 answered yes and 8 answered no.
(Also is the same for 'Do you like a range of fonts on the front cover?')

Do you like a range of colours on a magazine front cover? 23 answered yes and 1 answered no.

Which genre do you like in a magazine? 16 answered Rock, 11 answered Pop, 8 answered Punk, 7 answered Metal, 7 answered R&B, 0 for Jazz and Classical and 9 answered Other.

How often do you read magazines? 0 answered everyday, 1 answered Twice a week, 7 answered Once a week, 9 answered Once a month.

How much would you spend on a magazine? 17 answered £1-3, 8 answered £4-6 and 0 answered £7-9.

Do you like having a main image on a magazine front cover? 24 answered yes, 0 answered no.

For a title, what size do you prefer? 11 answered Big, 12 answered Medium and 1 answered Small.

What is your age? 0 answered 10-13, 16 answered 14-16, 7 answered 17-19 and 1 answered 20+.

What is your gender? 14 Answered Male and 10 answered Female.

I will use these results to construct my magazine, I will use them to consider how my magazine will look, for example to font sizes, what will be included and how it will be put together in general.
I have found out from this questionnaire that:
- Competitions are a good feature in a magazine.
- A range of fonts suit a magazine well.
- Rock is the genre that I will be using and I will aim it at the target audience that like Rock.
- Magazines are more likely to be read once a month.
- The best price for a magazine is between £1-3 so I will go for the middle, £1.99 or £2.99
- Having a main image on the front cover is well suited for a Rock magazine.
- The masthead on the front cover needs to be at a medium size, not too big or not too small, so it's easy to read.
- My target group is from 14-16.
- More males answered my questionnaire so I will use colours and font that apply to them and also females.

Interview.
So, this month, HEARDRUM has been speaking to a BRAND SPANKING NEW Singer. Here, we interviewed this young man who insisted his girlfriend stayed in the interview with him! Aw, young love!

HTD: “So, Matt, we’ve heard this is your first interview in these kinds of conditions, how do you feel?”
Matt: “It doesn’t seem that bad, plus I’ve got my lovely girlfriend next to me, nothing can really go wrong.”

HTD: “Well, it’s great that to hear! Do you care about how people see you and your music?”

Matt: “No, I don’t mind, I know that I don’t like some artists’ music, so I understand that not everyone will like me.”

HTD: “Well, that’s a great way to look at it. So you’re 17 with a very pretty girlfriend and now you’ve started a career? What about College or University?”

Matt: “I’ve always been interested in music and singing and girls, haha. I used to sing in the shower, put a few words together to make a song; I didn’t think I would end up here! I left school at 16 at the normal age, I wasn’t interested in College or University, I do have a job though so I do earn money, it’s not that much of a problem.”

HTD: “Your song has been sold to thousands around the world, it must all be new and a big shock for you, surely? To suddenly be noticed as a star?”

Matt: “I guess so, I was used to singing in front of friends for a laugh every now and again, but now people around the world are singing my song, wow.. It is a big shock, but it’s really nice.”

HTD: “It looks like you’re dealing with it well and your girlfriend here, Sophie, how do you feel about your boyfriend suddenly having girls all over him?”

Sophie: “Erm, well. I guess I’m used to it by now, every couple has their problems with someone trying to get at them, so now it’s become a norm, you learn not to be bothered by it. I’m so proud of him to get this far, I told him to pursue in his singing and he did.”

HTD: “So Sophie here helped you pursue into singing, Matt? Do you like the decision you’ve made? You can’t go back now, really.”

Matt: “I do like the decision I made and I’m glad Sophie helped me go forward, I love writing songs, I love singing and I love making people happy with my music. So becoming an artist around the world is exactly what I want. Plus, I’ve got a bit of extra cash to treat my girl.”

HTD: “Ah, I see. Well, we hope you the best and I’m sure we’ll see you soon, Matt! I wouldn’t be surprised if you end up on our magazine again, you’ll certainly be inside it often. Aw, aren’t you a sweetie!”

Matt: “Really? You’d feature me inside your magazine? ”

HTD: “Of course we will, we want you to be big, Matt! We love your music so everyone should know about you!”

Matt: “Thank you very much! I’ll mention that you helped me on my road to success and trust me, I’ll be buying this magazine whenever the new ones come out!”

HTD: “Hahah, it was lovely speaking to you Matt, good luck and most importantly, have fun!”

For this draft, I looked at magazines I’ve researched to look at how they are produced and where the main features are placed.
I placed the masthead at the top of the page with part of the image covering the bottom middle of it, to show that the image is just as important as the text. I placed the cover-line directly over the image to show the audience what the main image is about and what is featured in the magazine. I placed the barcode on the bottom right hand corner of the page, including the price beside it so the audience look from the main features on the magazine before looking at the cost.

From looking at the layouts of the magazines, I discovered that the title is spread across both pages at the top, the image takes up the whole of one page and the text covers the other page, using this I placed my layout like that, including a kicker on the title of the story for it to stand out.

From researching into the contents pages of magazines, I took note that the title isn’t that large and does not take up much of the page, but is easily noticeable. The page itself has more image than text, with captions on the images as well as what pages they are featured on. On a few of the contents pages, there was a little banner near the bottom which either spoke about what was in the magazine further on or what was available, competitions as such.

From looking at the font styles on rock magazines, I have found out that the masthead has a unique, house style font that represents the magazine; it is stylish with a slightly aggressive tone due to the genre. The other fonts on the cover have the same type of style as the masthead, but are visibly different. I used another tally, asking 20 people again which one they preferred for the masthead and which one they would choose for the slogan. The others I will use throughout my magazine. I chose these fonts because of their aggressive and 'rocky' style.

Masthead:
Kingdom hearts- ///////// 10- 10 people chose this font, a few reasons for it was that they chose it was that it is 'rocky', 'stylish', 'aggressive' and well suited.
Burgfest- // 2- The 2 that chose this font said that it is a 'cool' font, but not right for a
Party Business- //// 4- "This font looks good." I asked someone who chose it, I also asked someone who chose another one about it. "It's alright and has the right look for the genre, but a few of the letters look odd."
Blade 2- /// 3- "It looks rocky and scary, but it doesn't work as well as the others."
Dotum- 0: This font, I feel is too simple and bland for the magazine.
Gabriola- 0: "It does not have the style that rock magazines hold." Was said by someone who I asked.
Arial Black- 0: This font does not have the 'rocky' look that I am looking for.
Bernard MT Condensed- 0: When I asked why this font wasn't a possibility, it was said that it 'didn't suit the genre'.

Kingdom hearts is the font I will use for the masthead, I then asked the same 20 people about the font for the slogan.

Slogan:
Burgfest- //// 4- The people who chose this said that they liked how it looked against Kingdom hearts.
Party Business-////// 6- One person said "it fits in, matching the masthead."
Blade 2- // 2- "It has too much for it." One person said who chose a different font.
Dotum-// 2- One person said "it looks like it's from a typewriter, it looks cool."
Gabriola- // 2- "It contrasts, I like it".
Arial Black-// 2- "It looks alright against the title, but it looks plain and not original."
Bernard MT Condensed- // 2- When I asked the two people who chose this, they both said that they liked how it suited against the masthead.

I have chose Party Business for the slogan, though the results I got was quite levelled out.
From researching into magazines, the main colours used are black, white, red and occasionally yellow. The colour black connotates power, white connotates purity, red connotates passion and yellow connotates idealism.

I was testing different colours to find out which one worked best with a magazine I wanted to produce, I used the colours that I saw on the magazines that I’ve researched. I was trying to find the best colours that worked together, I went around with a tally to find out which colour suited best, I asked 20 people on their vote. From the results, I have found that having ‘Red, Blue and Black’ had the most votes, I have decided to use these colours on my magazine, I used the normal red and black colours and added in blue to add a different mood.

/// - 3 : These colours contrast well together, black connotes power and white connotes peace, the red connotes blood and passion which work together well in this magazine.
/////// - 7 : The red here connotes passion, blood, the blue connotes a sense of royalty and contrasts well against the red whilst the black works against, but also with them both.
//// - 4 : The black that connotes power contrasts against the white which connotes purity and peace, the yellow that connotes happiness mixes well with the other two.
// - 2 : The black, which connotes power works well with the red which connotes blood and passions, they contrast well and the yellow which connotes hope and happiness mixes in with them both.
//// - 4 : The red which connotes blood and passion contrasts with the white which connotes peace and purity, the yellow mixes in with them both because it connotes happiness and hope.

Typography- The masthead has a broken glass style, which shows that the magazine is loud and has a certain style, the cover line is in italic san-serif font which is the same size as the masthead to stand out just as much, to show the audience which artist is mainly featured in the magazine. The font styles were chosen to appeal
to the target audience. In the banner at the bottom of the page, the font is just a little smaller than the text
in the top banner; it shows that on the magazine cover, that text is not necessarily that important to read. The entire font on the cover is san-serif, which represents that it gets straight to the point and also has a rebellious hint. The effect that the fonts have is to appeal to the target audience using the different styled fonts to catch their eye.
Layout-The route of the eye follows from the title, being the most important part of the cover to read, to then across the main picture and cover line, so it shows the desired target audience what’s inside the magazine and what the main story is inside. Finally, the route of the eye follows along the banner and another story about posters, representing to the audience what else is in the magazine and what there is to offer. In the primary optical area, it is focused on the text and part of the image. The hotspots focus on the image and text. On the cover, there is more of the image than text; it shows that the cover is trying to appeal to the target market through the picture, rather than text. The text and layout in general is quite orderly, the text staying on straight rows, apart from the cover line. It gives the audience the effect that even though the layout looks cluttered, the text and image is easy to see.
Mode of address – The language is formal and appeals to the audience it is aimed at. The magazine holds a playful(the simple colours), stylish(it's simple and attracts to the audience without being over the top) and a slightly aggressive(the sharpness of the cover story in the middle and the masthead) tone because of how it is laid out and the use of fonts and colours.
Colour-The colours used are red (blood, anger, passion and romance), white (purity, peace, and cleanliness), blue (trust, confidence, cold), black (power and sexuality) and yellow (Joy, happiness, optimism, idealism.) The red appeals to the target audience
Images-There is a mid shot of all four band members on the cover, the lightning is
slightly high key, too bright to be natural; it looks like it was taken in a professional photo shoot because there is no background to it. The costume looks like a style that the band holds. The image uses bright colours to draw the audience in and the shot shows that the band stands out.

Typography- The masthead is on the top left-hand corner, it is just slightly bigger than the coverline, the way that the image slightly covers the masthead, shows that it is easy to see what magazine it is without looking just at the title, which is in a san-serif large bold font, it’s tucked away in the corner because the other text on the page is more important, the cover line sits in the middle of the page to be the main focus point of
the page. The font says the same on the whole front cover apart from a part on the cover line. The effect it gives is quite plain and simple, but gets straight to the point.
Layout- The layout is ordered and professional looking. The route of the eye goes from the title across to a part of font before over the main image and cover line and then along to the barcode. The primary optical area sits over the cover line, showing that it’s the main part of the whole cover. The hotspots again focus on the main image and part of the cover line. The terminal optical area is over the barcode and an extra in the cover. Despite the text being placed directly over the image, it is easy to see and easy to determine who the band is. There is more image than text, showing that the image and the band is the focus point in the magazine. It all gives the effect that the magazine has a style that it goes by in all its magazines. The layout is ordered, like it has been placed carefully on the page.
Mode of address- The magazine is written in a formal manner, it holds a laid back tone(with how ordered the layout is and the simpleness of the font) the font looks elegant on the page.
Colour- The colours used are red (blood, passion), white (purity, peace, cleanliness), they appeal to the audience because red is a popular colour for most rock magazines.
Image- The image is a long shot of the four band members and it looks like high lighting, it doesn’t really look like natural lighting. The costumes look casual, not really different like the KERRANG magazine. It signifies what the band are like together and what style they have. The colours that the band is wearing are quite plain and simple, as if they wore them to fit in with the style of the magazine.

Typography- The masthead sits at the top of the page, covering the whole width of the cover. It is a serif font with a slight san-serif style, the whole font on the cover follows this kind of style, and the cover line sits in the middle of the page as the main focus for what’s featured inside the magazine. The effect all the text on the page is even though rock is considered a heavy genre of music, it has a softer side to it, and the font shows this with the serif/san-serif style.
Layout- The layout is orderly and organised, having the text placed neatly along the edges of the cover, it gives the effect that even though the rock genre is heavy, the style of the layout is
organised. The route of the eye follows from the masth
ead along the image of the artist and the cover line, which is also sat in the primary optical area, showing the audience what the main part of the magazine is and what is featured inside. Finally, the route of the eye seems to have nothing to go along on the bottom until it gets to the barcode.
Mode of address- The language seems formal, the text is ordered on the page and it gives a laid back tone to the magazine.
Colour- The colours used are black which connotates power and sexuality, white which
connotates purity and peace, a little bit of read which connotates passion and blood and a light pastel pink which represents mystery, it gives the effect that the magazine is ‘hiding’ from the audience, drawing them in to read it if they want to know more.
Image- The image sits in the middle of the page, but it has a very low key lighting tone on it, it gives the effect that the magazine want the text to stand out more than the image. The long shot is used to show that the artist is wearing a leather jacket which is what most rock stars wear; it signifies a certain style that they hold as a genre. The way that the artist is stood shows that he's calm and relaxed, which adds to the laid back tone of the magazine, it also adds a stylish hint.

Typography- The title of the contents page is not as large as the masthead on the front cover, but is still a larger and bold
er than the other text on the page. The font of the page is san-serif;the entire font is in capitals to stand out more on the page. The numbers and the more important text is in a bolder font, to stand out and give the effect that the magazine has made it clear what pages the information is on and what are the more important features in the magazine.
Layout- The layout is ordered; it has the effect that it is intellectual and makes it easier for the audience to understand. The layout follows the route of the eye; it starts at a paragraph from the editor of the magazine, letting the audience know that the editor doesn't just make the magazine, he talks about his life as well as artists and bands. It then goes across to the title and a pull quote from a band member. It then goes across mainly the images on the page and finally more images. There are more images than text on the page, the effect that gives is that the magazine prefers to have the audience look at the images rather than read the text.
Mode of address- The language is formal, the fact that the text is in capitals gives the effect that the magazine is loud, it also makes it slightly aggressive, as if the magazine is getting the point across by standing out and 'shouting'. It gives across a laid back tone(the ordered layout on the page with the images and text), yet it is stylish(how the images are placed and the colours of the text).
Colour- The colours on the page follow the theme of the front cover, yellow, black and white.
Images- There is a range of images on the page, using different kinds of lighting, low, high and natural; there is also a different range of the costumes that are worn with different angle shots/types, they all feature the artists and bands, giving the effect that the audience has a
range of genres to look at. It gives the audience a choice in what they prefer more. Even though all the images are different, they all contrast and work together, the band images look similar and all the single artists images'are either close-ups or mid-shots.

Typography- The title is a lot larger than the other text on the page to stand out, the font on the page is the same and is all san-serif, sticking to what was also on the front cover, it keep
s the same style. There is a banner at the bottom of the page, offering a deal for the audience
Layout- The layout is ordered; having more text on the page than the image, but the image is larger and stands out more. The route of the eye goes from the title on the page along part of the text to then across the main image and main story in the magazine and on the contents page; finally it follows along the banner at the bottom. The layout is quite simple, not making it difficult for the audience to understand and follow, it has an ordered style to it, but because there is a lot on the page it makes it cluttered.
Mode of address- The language speaks to its audience in a formal way.
Colour- The colours used is the same on the front cover, like it’s following some sort of theme. The colours used almost make this page look like it should be part of a newspaper, the small splash of colour brings it to life, but not enough to make it stand out against other contents pages.
Image- The image isn’t of an artist of band; it is of a building and looks like a low angle, natural lighting at night time.

Typography- The title on the page is only just larger than the
other text on the page, which doesn’t make it stand out as much than on the other contents pages. The fonts differ, part is bold and other part is italic, it gives the effect that the bolder text is more important and is the feature in the magazine.
Layout- The layout is simple and ordered, there are more images on the page than text which shows that the magazine cares more about the image than the text on the page. There isn’t much to follow on the route of the eye, it sticks mostly to the image on the page, but also finishes on the bold text at the bottom in the terminal optical area.
Mode of address- The text is formal, the layout is simple and the whole page is ordered.
Colour- There is hardly any colour on the page, only the black text but a bit of red placed on the bottom to stand out.
Image- The image is placed on more of the page and is a close up of the artist, it has a natural lighting and you cannot see any clothing on the artist, but there is a prop of a tattoo needle which represents pain. There is only one image on the page, which makes that the main focus point in the magazine, but also makes it so there isn't much too see, so it's slightly boring.

Typography- There is a pull quote on the double page which has the largest text; there is a kicker in the first paragraph of the text. The entire font is san-serif to stick to the theme of the magazine. There are captions placed with the pictures on the pages to tell the audience who is in the picture.
Layout- The layout is ordered, the effect it gives is for the audience to be able to read it easily and to know what is on the page before they read it and what it would be about. From the route of the eye, it starts mainly on the pull quote before going across to the images on the page, it gives the effect that the most important features on the page are the images. The hotspots are split half and half on the text and images. There are more images than text on the page, showing which is more important, it gives the effect that the images are more important and that the audience will pay more attention to it. The layout is quite ordered, it gives off a stylish and a
Mode of address- The language speaks to the audience in an intellectual formal manner, the magazine holds a stylish and laid back tone, infusing the pictures with the colour them, using them both to add a rocky theme to the pages, the fonts seem simple, which is the laid back part of the pages.
Colour- The colours used is mostly black(power, sexuality) and white(purity, cleanliness) with a splash of red(passion, love).
Image- The images on the page range in shots and angles, but are all black and white, they are all about the band.

Typography- The pull quote is in a house style font, and covers most of the first page to stand out more than the other font which is a lot smaller. The pull quote gives the effect that it’s different and stands out more because it’s unique.
Layout- The route of the eye follows from the pull quote to along the artist and then the text featured on the page, it finally finishes at the artist. The layout is quite ordered; the pull quote is different and adds a messy tone to the page. The hotspots are again focused on the image and the text, to give the effect that they’re both as important, which is also why there is a fair amount of text and image on the pages. The principle of thirds really does not show on this double page spread, the image and the text on the page are ordered, which contrasts against the house style font nicely.
Mode of address- The language is formal and the text/font is used to attract the audience to the page.
Colour- The colours on the page are mostly black and white, the only colour on the page is on the image of the artist to make that the main focus point for colour on the double page spread.
Image- The image is a mid-shot of the artist, the costume looks like what the artist would wear on a normal occasion, as if it was her style, the lighting on the image looks natural.

Typography- The coverstory is larger to stand out on the first page and there is a pull quote on the second. They used italic writing to let the audience know that it’s a question to the band to answer; it also makes it easy for the audience to read a specific bit that they would maybe want to know about more. The fonts are san-serif.
Layout- The layout is very ordered and not very exciting; it gives the effect that it gets straight to the point. The route of the eye simply follows along the image before then along the text, the primary optical area includes part of the image and the terminal contains the text, splitting it half and half. There is more image on the page rather than text. The layout on the page is ordered.
Mode of address- The magazine speaks to the audience in a formal manner, it has a very laid back attitude, the colours, fonts and the image infuse together and are quite plain.
Colour – There is hardly any colour used on this double page spread.
Image- The image is a mid-shot of the four band members; it looks like they are wearing clothing that they would normally wear, the lighting is natural.

Front Covers

From looking at the front covers, I have noticed that they all try and follow the same image, having the cover line in the middle of the page, the masthead at the top of the page and the image in the middle of the page, larger than any of the text. They use colours that appeal to the audience.

Contents Pages

From looking at contents pages, I have noticed that there is a variety, some magazines prefer to have mainly images, others like a bit more text on the page, the main theme is to have the images as the main focus points on the page, it is also to have the same colours that the front page has.

Double Page Spreads

From looking at the double page spreads, I have noticed that they all contain more image than text and most of them a pull quote to draw the audience in to the text on the page, what the text contains differs on the magazines, some like to have questions about the artists and others like to have a story from the artist them self about what has happened to them recently
